Between a pillow and a hard place

Surely you have at least one of these people in your life:  You know, the ones who seem to effortlessly and beautifully glide through life, whose face is perpetually unblemished, who escapes the daily grind unscathed, who never has visible underarm perspiration on her perfectly dry-cleaned silk sheath dress (probably because she has nothing about which to sweat). You know…

I’m California born and bred. But because my sister married a Southern gent and raised her family in Memphis, and because both of my daughters went to college at University of Kentucky, I’ve been fortunate enough over the years to visit quite a few cities and small towns in the South. (Yes, I do believe…

Reality Bites

As I was grabbing my usual go-to brand of orange juice at the grocery store a few weeks ago, I actually took the time to look, read and comprehend the label. There it was: “100% REAL Orange Juice.”  I about choked on my Dentyne. 100%? Hometown Proud

After months of comparing calendars and juggling schedules, at 11:30 a.m. a few Fridays ago, I was finally going to be reunited with an “old” friend. Except for a too-brief conversation and a quickie hug at our 30th-year Porterville High School Class of ’75 reunion, I had not seen Therese in 38 years. So I was a nervous wreck. I was…

So we walked onto a Caymanian bus …

When Chuck and I were in Grand Cayman last week, as we were discussing how best to get to the other side of the island for dinner at the highly touted Cracked Conch, counter to my preference to take a pristine, pricey, quiet, safe taxi, Chuck insisted we take the $2.50 bus — of, for and (driven) by…

About Me

It's true! Despite playing defense virtually all my life against the onslaught of this sometimes-ugly aging process, it...has...arrived! I naively thought I would escape cellulite (the Cottage Cheese) and crow's feet (the Crepe Paper). But I didn't! And why didn't anyone tell me about this emotional roller-coaster that comes with being an Empty-Nester?! My name is Jodie Barringer Myers. I'm a 54-year-old Friday/chardonnay/ hydrangea-loving wife/mom/court reporter living in Sacramento (Gold River!), California. Writing is cathartic for me. And because I look to find humor and humility among the rubble that is my now very peri-menopausal self, I'm hopeful that you will laugh, cry, learn, enjoy and, most of all, relate to what I have to say. After all, we're all in this together, right?
