To all you 30 – Somethings

Consider this a sort of cautionary tale… Following is kind of a combination of pearls of wisdom/a to-do list/sage advice to all of you now living out your glorious Thirties. ~~~~~ Go put on your bikini, however skimpy. Now go parade around in it…on a busy street…in a crowded bustling metropolis if you feel like it. Because nothing…

The E L M M Diet

I don’t know about you, but I’ve about had it with the bombardment of diet ads out there. I know each new year brings inspiration for losing weight and getting fit. I get that. This year, however, it’s gotten out of hand. From the Rachael Ray Show and Dr. Oz (which I think should now be called The Diet…

I was the perfect parent — until I had kids

I remember like it was yesterday — although it was 26 years ago — that Chuck and I vowed to each other, after our sweet little niece Jessica had just consumed a rather large piece (in reality, one-inch square) of chocolate fudge — that our children would never, ever (and I mean never, everrrrr) have such…

Weighty issues

W E I G H T. What's yours? I know — you're not about to tell me. Nor will I share mine with you. Ever. Even though it's just a number, and even though you have eyes and can see my relative bulk and amplitude, and even though you could estimate, probably pretty accurately, what my number…

Opening Doors

Gosh, I haven’t talked to you since…last year. Good to be back in the blogosphere. I hope you had yourself a very Merry Christmas, and that 2013 will be splendid.  The year is a week old already, and I’m just now beginning to come out of my post-holiday mini funk… …Because it was so much fun having my…

True Confessions : I faked it

I admit it. I faked it. I'm shocked that I actually pulled it off.  In celebration of my sweet success, I just sequestered myself in my bedroom and burst out in Gangnam Style song and dance! Here's the history, and what happened… I have only the fondest of childhood memories of family sojourns to Porterville's finest Christmas tree lots…

Deep Breaths and Eggnog

‘Tis the season to be jolly… And busy, and excited, and extra stressed-out. I mean that in a good way. This year our house will be full to the brim on Christmas day! We’ll have a record number — 14, maybe 15 — for Christmas dinner. Besides the usual wonderful suspects, we’ll be hosting Julia’s…

One o’ those days

Have you ever had one of those days… where you talk yourself out of working out at the club and vow you'll work out at home instead, later, where you stay in your 'jams until 10:45 and don't brush your teeth until 11:10, and then you make not a list but about three lists, and…

The Power of Thank-You

Thank-you’s come in all shapes and sizes. A “thanks” from an acquaintance to whom you wish a great day; a “thanks for stopping by” from the store owner whose shop you just browsed in…and didn’t buy a thing; a quick text from a friend in gratitude for the latte you bought her a couple hours…

Ding Dong the Twinkie’s dead

I woke up this morning to some sad and disturbing news. Hostess, the baking company, has called it quits. It’s the end of an era. An icon has died…and so has a little snippet of my youth . Union bickering, sign of the times, blah-blah-blah, they said. So I’ve been tapping into my emotional library…

About Me

It's true! Despite playing defense virtually all my life against the onslaught of this sometimes-ugly aging process, it...has...arrived! I naively thought I would escape cellulite (the Cottage Cheese) and crow's feet (the Crepe Paper). But I didn't! And why didn't anyone tell me about this emotional roller-coaster that comes with being an Empty-Nester?! My name is Jodie Barringer Myers. I'm a 54-year-old Friday/chardonnay/ hydrangea-loving wife/mom/court reporter living in Sacramento (Gold River!), California. Writing is cathartic for me. And because I look to find humor and humility among the rubble that is my now very peri-menopausal self, I'm hopeful that you will laugh, cry, learn, enjoy and, most of all, relate to what I have to say. After all, we're all in this together, right?
