We’re Baaack…

It’s back to Reality-Ville come Monday.  But what a glorious, too-brief, beautiful vacay it was.

I have a question for you though:  Do you ever envision how something is going to be…and then the reality of it is totally different? Not good, not bad,  just different?

Because, like, in my previous post (Gone Fishin’), I was all atwitter in anticipation of… Facebook-sleuthing, Email-inbox-cleaning and playing more Words With Friends. And remember I threatened to excessively blog? Well, I barely touched the computer.

And I had it all pictured in my scheming/planning little brain that we would while away the hours playing multiple games of Catch Phrase and Spoons whilst eating s’mores and drinking wine.  Spoons were used only for stirring milk into our morning coffee, and it was a waste of space in my luggage to pack Catch Phrase.

Some dreams do come true, however: We did enjoy our s’mores and wine.

Excuse the lipstick, please

And I had gone back and forth and back and forth and back and forth with the rental place about which-oh-which cabin to rent. The pictures looked great online. The location seemed superb. And in reality… it was perfect!  A little “cozier” (realtor word for “teensy-weensy” and “tiny”) than expected, but B I G in charm and personality.

Our Tahoe abode

And some things I pictured that we would do… we actually DID! Like hiking. Two hikes, actually. Killer workout, with killer views to reward us after going uphill in high altitude three miles. Each way. Well worth it.

On top of the world, looking down on creation

And it didn’t even occur to me that we might want to go boating. But we did. And it was fabulous.

Blinded by BLUE!

 Basketball anyone?

Cassidy and Matt playin’ hoops among the pines

So we didn’t do much Power-Lounging, and we never got to watch the avocados turn brown.  An afternoon nap on the back deck? Not even close. But we did indulge in delicious scallops at Garwood’s,  and we did enjoy every savory bite of the halibut and crusty bread at Sunnyside. And maybe the best of all? We did ring in Julia’s 21st birthday in grand style ~ celebrating being together, her finally becoming legal :), and soaking up that Tahoe blue.

So yeah.  Expectations vs. Reality.  So much of what we did and saw was waaaay different than my expectations.  But it was all waaaay fun.

And if we were to take a family vote, I think it would be unanimous: We’ll be back to our “cozy” Tahoe getaway next summer.

CCaCP was missed last week. Happy to hear ’twas a superb time. Agree with you… how expectations and reality do vary. Can’t wait for the next topic!

About Me

It's true! Despite playing defense virtually all my life against the onslaught of this sometimes-ugly aging process, it...has...arrived! I naively thought I would escape cellulite (the Cottage Cheese) and crow's feet (the Crepe Paper). But I didn't! And why didn't anyone tell me about this emotional roller-coaster that comes with being an Empty-Nester?! My name is Jodie Barringer Myers. I'm a 54-year-old Friday/chardonnay/ hydrangea-loving wife/mom/court reporter living in Sacramento (Gold River!), California. Writing is cathartic for me. And because I look to find humor and humility among the rubble that is my now very peri-menopausal self, I'm hopeful that you will laugh, cry, learn, enjoy and, most of all, relate to what I have to say. After all, we're all in this together, right?
